If every household in the U.S. replaced one light bulb with a CFL (coiled) bulb, it would prevent enough pollution to equal removing one million cars from the road!  Replacing a 100-watt incandescent with a 32-watt CFL can save you at least $30 in energy costs over the life of the bulb.

Energy safe tip from Cleveland Public Power - Count on It:

It's getting warm out, so make sure you change your air filter every month- and ESPECIALLY of r heavy use months like the hot summers ahead.  IF the filter looks dirty after a month, change it.  At a minimum, change the filter every three months.  A dirty filter will slow down air flow and make the system work harder to keep you warm or cool-- wasting energy.  A clean filter will also prevent dust and dirt from building up in the system, leading to expensive maintenance and/or early system failure.

With the weather as it's been, have you been breaking out the electric gardening tools?  Electrical cords can be a tripping hazard.  Place them carefully to avoid injury.  Warm electrical cords are a sign of overloading; ensure that before an appliance is plugged in with an electrical cord that it is properly rated.  Brittle, cracked, or worn electrical cords should be discarded.   Never run electrical cords under rugs, near heaters, or water pipes.

Mushroom Cilantro Tacos.jpg

There's a lot going on at the markets this week-- flower day is still here, herbs such as rosemary, basil, Italian parsley and cilantro are flourishing, tender greens are still in such as spinach and Swiss chard, and maple syrup is in excess in NE Ohio! But the big star, especially at the Crocker Park market, are the mushrooms, wonderful as a substitute for meat in vegetarian dishes.  Plus, speaking of herbs, did you know that the #1 herb in the market is cilantro?  It's great for detoxing, and very versatile.  Click the picture below for a tasty Mexican dish that combines all of these locally owned ingredients: Chard and Mushroom Tacos with Cilantro Jalapeno Sauce! And check out the WHOLE Locally Grown board on Pinterest for many more recipes!

Unplug appliances or equipment if you are repairing it.  Some items are still an electrical hazard even when unplugged, such as televisions and computers.  These items have devices called  capacitors that retain an electrical charge after they are unplugged, as they are designed to store electricity.  It is always best for a licensed professional to repair such items.

Energy safe tip from Cleveland Public Power - Count on It:

It's an easy one this week... with some thunderstorms brewing this weekend, make sure you don't touch any downed electrical lines, or anything around it (like branches or trees) and stay away from them until the emergency crews arrive. Once power is restored, gradually turn on the electrical appliances.

If you're doing your cooking inside, here's some tips to keep the heat and energy use down-- develop the habit of "lids-on" cooking to permit lower temperature settings, cook as muchof the meal in the oven at one time as possible, and include more stews, stir-frys, and other single-dish  meals on the menu.

Onion Tarte

It's the peak of the strawberries this week, and last week is probably the last week for them, so get them now while they're hot!!! There will be Mitchell's strawberry ice cream at Shaker Square, and strawberry short cakes at Crocker Park.  But what else?  Onions and zucchinis/squash are in!  Listen to the MP3 below, or on-air this morning, and you'll here Donita Anderson talk about an onion tarte-- here's a recipe we found on our Pinterest page that you might like to try!

Energy safe tip from Cleveland Public Power - Count on It:

Seal your heating and cooling ducts!  Ducts that move air to and from a forced air furnace, central air condition or heat pump are often big energy wasters.  Sealing and insulating ducts can improve the efficiency of your heating and cooling system by as much as 20% or more.  Focus first on sealing ducts that run through the attic, crawlspace, unheated basement, or garage.  Use duct sealant (mastic) or metal-backed (foil) tape to seal the seams and connections of ducts.  After sealing the ducts in those spaces, wrap the ducts in insulation to keep them from getting hot in the summer or cold in the winter.  Next, seal ducts that you can access in the heated or cooled part of the house.

Cauliflower

This week, cauliflower, broccoli, new potatoes, green beans, raspberries, and sweet cherries are now in season! In the mp3 below, Donita talks about how versatile cauliflower is, and how her favorite is adding some garlic and chicken broth to create a soup.  Below, you'll find that recipe on our Pinterest page, along with many other cauliflower dishes, everything from buffalo cauliflower to cauliflower pizza crusts!  Listen in to the rest of the mp3 too for information on how to clean and save the sweet Ohio strawberries that are just about out of season, that you can keep them all throughout the year, and some exciting news about artisan cheeses in Ohio!

Energy safe tip from Cleveland Public Power - Count on It:

What to do if someone is electrocuted?  First and foremost call 911 immediately, and don't touch them yourself-- you in turn can be shocked if the equipment is still energized.  Shut-off the electricity, either at the appliance or circuit breaker, and seek medical attention.  Only perform first aid or CPR when the injured party has been removed and isolated from the electrical source.
