There's a lot going on at the markets this week-- flower day is still here, herbs such as rosemary, basil, Italian parsley and cilantro are flourishing, tender greens are still in such as spinach and Swiss chard, and maple syrup is in excess in NE Ohio! But the big star, especially at the Crocker Park market, are the mushrooms, wonderful as a substitute for meat in vegetarian dishes.  Plus, speaking of herbs, did you know that the #1 herb in the market is cilantro?  It's great for detoxing, and very versatile.  Click the picture below for a tasty Mexican dish that combines all of these locally owned ingredients: Chard and Mushroom Tacos with Cilantro Jalapeno Sauce! And check out the WHOLE Locally Grown board on Pinterest for many more recipes!

Energy safe tip from Cleveland Public Power - Count on It:

Unplug appliances or equipment if you are repairing it.  Some items are still an electrical hazard even when unplugged, such as televisions and computers.  These items have devices called  capacitors that retain an electrical charge after they are unplugged, as they are designed to store electricity.  It is always best for a licensed professional to repair such items.

It's Mother's Day weekend, and what better way to prepare than to stop by the North Union Farmers Market to pick up ingredients for dinner, or a nice potted plant or flowers for the garden?  If you're heading to the Crocker Park Market, it's flower week there, plus a chef and live music.  At both markets though you'll find plenty of gorgeous flowers, and the in-season vegetables this week are ramps and asparagus.  Pick up some asparagus and some locally raised beef for a fantastic Mother's Day Meal!

If you'd like to take full advantage of both ramps and asparagus, try this Asparagus and Ramp Soup with Yogurt found on our "locally grown" board on Pinterest-- but make sure you re-pin many of are delicious locally grown recipes as well!

Energy safe tip from Cleveland Public Power - Count on It:

With the weather as it's been, have you been breaking out the electric gardening tools?  Electrical cords can be a tripping hazard.  Place them carefully to avoid injury.  Warm electrical cords are a sign of overloading; ensure that before an appliance is plugged in with an electrical cord that it is properly rated.  Brittle, cracked, or worn electrical cords should be discarded.   Never run electrical cords under rugs, near heaters, or water pipes.

Energy safe tip from Cleveland Public Power - Count on It:

It's getting warm out, so make sure you change your air filter every month- and ESPECIALLY of r heavy use months like the hot summers ahead.  IF the filter looks dirty after a month, change it.  At a minimum, change the filter every three months.  A dirty filter will slow down air flow and make the system work harder to keep you warm or cool-- wasting energy.  A clean filter will also prevent dust and dirt from building up in the system, leading to expensive maintenance and/or early system failure.

Energy safe tip from Cleveland Public Power - Count on It:

If every household in the U.S. replaced one light bulb with a CFL (coiled) bulb, it would prevent enough pollution to equal removing one million cars from the road!  Replacing a 100-watt incandescent with a 32-watt CFL can save you at least $30 in energy costs over the life of the bulb.

Friday, April 5, 2013.

We are happy to bring back Donita Anderson, finally the start of the outdoor markets at Shaker Square!  The first market is 8 a.m. to Noon on April 5.  What's in season? Tender greens, such as kale and spinach, early spring plants and flowers, sheep shearings, at more! The tender greens have a lot of energy from the earth and the sun, and would go great in this fresh and delicious kale & spinach pesto, pinned to our "Locally Grown" board.  Every week, we'll continue to pin more recipes with what's in season to our Locally Grown board, so be sure to follow us and re-pin your favorites! To see the pin, click the picture below.

Speaking of energy, here is this week's Energy Saving Tips, from Cleveland Public Power - Count On It.. While cooking your tasty locally grown recipes, make sure you plan ahead-- make sure you have all the ingredients, and remove all ingredients for each recipe one at time, to save the escape of energy from leaving the refrigerator door open for long periods of time. It's simple, but every little difference counts.
