Get a mentor

Who are the mentors that have helped you along the way? Choose mentors in multiple arenas. People within your organization, individuals outside of your organization and industry leaders. Individuals with mentors navigate the organization more quickly and actually earn more over a course of a career. Find a mentor or multiple mentors and invest in yourself.

Develop a 5 year career plan – start with the end and work backwards to identify which experiences and how much is needed.

In the Boler school, we work with students to develop a five-year plan for personal and career development. The goal is to provide our students with a road map for success. We focus on four specific areas - your personal growth, your community involvement, education,  and professional development. By developing a five-year plan, you have an opportunity to invest in yourself and develop the ideal you.

Take on new assignments that will broaden your experience/skill sets and your exposure – look for new opportunities (short term or long term) in your company.

Organizations today need people who can wear multiple hats and have a wide perspective of the organization and the industry. Are you that individual? By taking on short and long term assignments outside the scope of your normal duties. Not only will you gain visibility, you will gain expertise which are valuable to you and your organization. So what can you do today to take your skills and abilities to the next level?

Figure out what matters (to you, to your organization) and spend your time doing that.

Do you bring great value to your organization? Individuals who add value move through the organization more quickly and have a greater ability to negotiate salary, roles and organizational duties. Focus on what matters most and those activities that will add the greatest value to your organization. By doing so, you will invest in yourself and your organization.
